Sam Smith 5th at the Killington Stage Race

Sam Smith (Doylestown) headed north over Memorial Day Weekend to take part Killington Stage Race in Waitsfield, Vermont as a Category 3 racer. Friday consisted of a four lap circuit race covering 60 miles which passed through Calvin Coolidge State Park and State Forest. Unfortunately, the race was interrupted by ... a house fire ... on the course which neutralized the field with each racer finishing with the same time. Racing is crazy stuff. Saturday's second stage consisted of a 75 mile single loop road race finishing with a 1,550 foot climb to the finish line. Climbing is Sam's forte, and he gained several minutes on the leaders in the final climb to finish in 4th place. The final day's stage was an eleven mile "time trial" (where the riders race individually against the clock) which is a relatively new discipline for Sam but he still managed to place seventh in the stage, giving him 5th place in the overall classifications. Sam is hopeful that his efforts in Vermont will get him the upgrade points he needs to compete for the rest of the season as a Category 2 racer. Great job Sam!
